IDB: The Inter-American Development Bank will support the countries of the Americas in advancing toward universal health coverageIn his address to delegates at the opening session of the 52nd Directing Council and 65th Session of the Regional Committee of WHO, the Manager of the Social Sector of the IDB pledged his institution’s support to advance efforts toward universal health coverage.Héctor Salazar Sánchez recognized PAHO’s leadership in public health progress in the Americas through fighting disease, promoting equity, and improving the quality of life and longevity of its citizens. He indicated, however, that pending issues remain on the health agenda, including unacceptable health inequity levels, an increase in risk factors and the incidence of chronic noncommunicable diseases, and the persistence of neglected tropical diseases.

“To address these challenges, the IDB will support countries in their commitment to advance toward universal health care coverage, promoting the comprehensive strengthening of health systems, multisectoral work, and a focus on social and environmental determinants of health, while at the same time stimulating innovation and efficiency in the use of financial resources,” Salazar Sánchez noted.
