In his remarks at the opening session of 52nd Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the delegate of Cuba noted that health systems must be strengthened in order to achieve the goal of universal coverage.
“The poor suffer most from the consequences of economic crisis, and there will be no development nor health for all if human rights are not recognized and protected,” he said.
The Cuban delegate stressed that achieving adequate health systems requires political will, health infrastructure, and trained workers, among other things. “If poverty prevails, it will be difficult to achieve development goals,” he said.
“Health is a fundamental human right and in order to secure it, all our countries must be committed to this goal,” he added.
