Obesity, overweight, and healthy nutrition should become priorities throughout the Region of the Americas, noted the delegate of Ecuador to the 52nd Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization and asked to work on a resolution on this issue for next year.

“We should concentrate our efforts on primary health care strategies and a social determinants approach,” he stressed. He also congratulated Colombia for its receipt of verification of the elimination of onchocerciasis and indicated that Ecuador has also requested certification and is expecting to receive WHO verification shortly, making it the second country of the world to eliminate this disease.
