PAHO Director Carissa F. Etienne welcomed delegates to the 52nd PAHO Directing Council meeting today saying that their guidance and support was critical to PAHO’s technical cooperation going forward. Deliberations during this week “will direct development priorities and the flow of resources for decades to come. And how those resources flow will affect how the lives of people in our region will be shaped,” she said.
She said the importance of health to countries’ economic development, peace and security was clear and that universal health coverage provided the best overarching framework for efforts by PAHO and its member countries to advance health.
“Our Member States are showing that universal health coverage is not only for the wealthiest countries. They are showing that it is within reach of countries throughout the Americas. Each country will take its own path to advance this goal, but we can all aspire to achieve it.”
She urged delegates to approve PAHO’s new strategic plan for 2014 to 2019 and to support the organization in other ways and in other fora as well.
“We are looking for support from our partners and friends through forceful advocacy, inclusive dialog and joint action, in a world where persistent and recalcitrant inequalities threaten past and future progress.”
