Dominica: climate change has negative effects on small-island nations of the Region

The delegate of Dominica highlighted the health effects of climate change, particularly for the small island-nations in the Americas, and he called for the development of sustainable health systems and this issue’s prioritization in the Region as delegates considered the proposed PAHO Strategic Plan 2014–2019 during the 52nd Directing Council.

He informed the meeting’s participants that Dominica is considered the world fourth-most vulnerable country to climate change and described the spread of dengue and leptospirosis as a manifestation of this phenomenon.

The delegate also congratulated the PAHO Secretariat for its work in developing the Organization’s new Strategic Plan.
